At The Customized Classroom, we believe every student deserves a learning experience that’s engaging, choice-driven, and tailored to their unique needs. Our tutors play a vital role in making that mission a reality.

Job Description

As a tutor with The Customized Classroom, your role is to:

  • Provide high-quality instruction in your subject area(s) of expertise.
  • Adapt to different learning styles and needs.
  • Collaborate with students and families to set and achieve goals.
  • Maintain professional communication and reliability
  • Contribute your creativity – if you’d like to design a new course, we’ll support you or compensate you for building it!
  • Use our resources, but also be willing and able to adapt them as needed. We provide resources through our Tutelage Kit and a flexible curriculum to ensure you feel confident and prepared. Our teachers are not just homework helpers, but instructors with the tools they need and goals in mind.

Job Expectations

  • Be professional, punctual, and communicative with students and families.
  • Track student progress through ongoing “show-what-you-know” tasks and a final course product
  • Follow company policies (including cancellation and payment timelines).
  • Uphold the company’s values of curiosity, respect, and fun in every lesson.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student and family information

Tutor Vetting

All tutors undergo a selective application process. Requirements include:

  • Submission of transcripts.
  • Background check clearance
  • Teaching certification or active pursuit of certification.
    • Rare exceptions will be made for otherwise extremely qualified candidates
  • Demonstrated teaching experience and alignment with company values.

Services Offered

Tutors may teach in the following programs:

Power Half Hour (Virtual, 6+ weeks)

  • Short, consistent, targeted instruction (two 15-minute or one 30-minute sessions).
  • Great for test prep, vocab building, phonics, grammar, math facts, or any high-repetition skill.

Individual Courses of Study (8 weeks, In-Person, Virtual, or Hybrid)

  • Our signature one-on-one program for deep learning.
  • Combines high-repetition practice with rich content exploration.
  • Students choose from our course catalog, but lessons are adapted to individual goals.
  • Options:
    • Hybrid: one 45-minute in-person + one 15-minute virtual session weekly.
    • In-Person or Virtual: one 60-minute in-person or virtual session weekly, which includes 15 minutes of high-rep practice

Group Courses of Study (2 - 5 students, 8 weeks, In-Person or Virtual)

  • Collaborative learning with a balance of structure and personalization.
  • Students either join a pre-formed group or are matched by us.
  • Groups choose from our course catalog, but lessons are adapted to individual goals.

Elite Program (Custom Duration, In-Person, Virtual, or Hybrid)

  • High-touch, fully tailored program for advanced goals.
  • Great for final papers, college essays, advanced coursework, or skill interventions.
  • Flexible structure (e.g., two 45-minute sessions + 15-minute check-in, or one 105-minute session).
  • Exact plan determined during the Customized Learning Conference.

Payment

Method:

Families pay via Stripe on our website. Tutors are paid directly via Zelle.

Schedule:

Payments for a given month will be sent by the 15th of the following month. (Example: all September sessions are paid by October 15th.)

Tutor Pay Rates:

  • Power Half Hour: $28 per 30-minute session
  • Individual Tutoring: $57–$66 per 60-minute session (based on experience, with advancement opportunities)
  • Group Lessons: $70–$150 per 60-minute session (depending on number of students and experience)
  • Elite Program: $101–$110 per 90-minute session (based on experience, with advancement opportunities)

Employment Status & Taxes

Tutors are independent contractors (1099 workers). You are responsible for handling your own taxes. A 1099 form will be provided for tax reporting purposes.
