FAQ

Helpful questions such as “How are tutors vetted?” or “What if we need to switch tutors?”

What subjects do you tutor?

We offer tutoring in math, history, English, Spanish, writing, cooking, and more. Our course offerings are constantly expanding, as they mirror the areas of expertise of our tutors and interests of our students.

How do I schedule a session?

To schedule a session, simply fill out our registration form! Can’t decide on just one course? You’re welcome to select multiple options and then narrow down the course of study during your student’s Customized Learning Conference – a meeting held before each course begins. Not quite ready to register? No problem! Feel free to reach out to us by phone, email, or through our contact form.

What is your cancellation policy?

We have a 24-hour cancellation policy. Please notify your student’s teacher at least 24 hours before the class start time to receive a full credit for that class, which will be added to your account for future use.

  • For individual courses, Power Half Hour, or Elite Program lessons, please coordinate directly with your tutor to reschedule any missed sessions.
  • For group courses, the class will proceed as long as at least two students can attend. Credits from cancellations can be applied toward future courses.

We understand that emergencies happen. For cancellations made less than 24 hours before the lesson, 50% of the class fee will be credited to your account, and the remaining 50% will compensate the tutor for their time.

How do you track progress?

Each student’s learning goals are established during their Customized Learning Conference. Tutors track progress through periodic “show-what-you-know” tasks and a final course product aligned with the student’s goals – whether that’s a project, oral presentation, blog post, or practice test. While assessment is important to us, the focus remains on learning, not testing.

How are tutors vetted?

Tutors are vetted through a selective application process, in which we ensure that their skill-sets, experience level, and values align with our company goals.  Each tutor who is selected must submit their transcripts and pass a background check prior to official onboarding.  All tutors must either have a teaching certification or be actively pursuing certification, and most of our teachers have prior classroom experience.

What if I need to switch tutors?

If you need to switch tutors, don’t hesitate to contact us!  We are confident that we can figure something out and meet your student’s needs and preferences.

How are payments made?

Payments can be made through our website using Stripe or PayPal. We ask that all courses be paid in full after the Customized Learning Conference and at least 10 days before the first class to allow time to prepare materials. If needed, PayPal offers a “Pay in Four” option, allowing you to split the total into four equal, interest-free payments.

What is the Customized Learning Conference?

The Customized Learning Conference is a one-on-one meeting held for every new student before their course begins. It can take place in person or virtually and includes the student (as an active participant in goal-setting and decision-making), at least one parent or guardian, and a Master Tutor. While this tutor may not be the student’s instructor for the course, they are highly experienced in facilitating these conferences.

The purpose of the Customized Learning Conference is to ensure that your student has a voice from the very start of their learning journey. Together, we’ll discuss learning goals, interests, learning styles, and past strengths or challenges. If your student is considering multiple courses or learning tracks, this is also the time to finalize course selection.

We ask that you bring any relevant data or work samples. Don’t worry – we’ll send a detailed agenda and prep email ahead of time so you feel confident and prepared!

What is the “Just for Me” Fund?

Each time a student enrolls in a course, they receive $10 automatically added to their personal “Just for Me” Fund. Parents may also choose to add to the fund if desired.

This fund is used to purchase tailored learning materials – such as vocabulary flashcards, educational apps, student-selected books, workbooks, and games – that support your child’s academic goals and personal interests.

After the Customized Learning Conference, your child’s teacher will recommend specific items from our curated catalogue. We also maintain a shared resource library and reuse materials when possible to ensure the fund is spent wisely.

Where are courses held?

Individual Courses of Study and Elite Program tracks can take place at your home, a nearby coffee shop or library, or virtually via Zoom. Power Half Hours are held virtually on Zoom.

Group Courses of Study may be hosted at your home or a classmate’s home. If you volunteer to host and your home is selected, you’ll receive a 10% discount on your student’s tuition. We also have a central location available for group classes when needed – details will be provided in advance.

No matter the setting, we ensure every learning environment is positive, welcoming, and conducive to focused learning.
